Understand Your Medicare Coverage Options

Medicare can be delivered through Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage. If you choose Original Medicare, Medicare Supplement Insurance can help with certain out-of-pocket costs. We explain the differences and compare the options available where you live.

The basics

Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare

One of the first decisions many Medicare beneficiaries face is how they want their Medicare coverage delivered. Original Medicare is administered by the federal government. Medicare Advantage provides Part A and Part B coverage through private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. You must have both Part A and Part B to join Medicare Advantage.

Original MedicareFederal program

Part A and Part B are provided through Original Medicare.

Doctors & hospitals
Any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S.
Referrals
In most cases, you don’t need a referral to see a specialist.
Drug coverage
You can add a separate Medicare drug plan (Part D).
Out-of-pocket costs
There’s no yearly limit unless you have supplemental coverage such as Medigap, Medicaid or employer coverage.
Medicare AdvantageRun by private insurance companies

Part A and Part B coverage is delivered through a Medicare-approved private plan.

Doctors & hospitals
You may need to use providers in the plan’s network and service area.
Referrals
Some plans require referrals or prior authorization for certain services.
Drug coverage
Most plans include Part D prescription drug coverage.
Out-of-pocket costs
Plans have a yearly limit on covered Medicare services; the amount varies by plan.

Neither structure is automatically right for everyone. Your doctors, prescriptions, travel, budget and the plans available in your county can all matter.

Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medigap works alongside Original Medicare.

Medicare Supplement Insurance, or Medigap, is private insurance that helps pay some of the deductibles, coinsurance and other out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not pay.

01

It works with Original Medicare

You generally need Part A and Part B to buy a Medigap policy. It can help with certain costs left after Original Medicare pays its share.

02

Plan letters have standardized benefits

In most states, Medigap policies are identified by letters. Policies with the same letter provide the same basic benefits, although premiums can vary by insurer.

03

The enrollment window is important

Your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Outside that period, your options and pricing can depend on your circumstances and state rules.

04

Prescription coverage is separate

Medigap policies sold today generally do not include prescription drug coverage. Medicare Part D is separate.

Medigap is not Medicare Advantage. You cannot use a Medigap policy to pay Medicare Advantage plan premiums, deductibles or copayments.
Before you compare

What should you have ready when comparing plans?

Nothing on this list is required to talk with us, but each item lets the agent check a plan against your real situation rather than a general one.

Your Medicare card

Your Part A and Part B start dates are printed on it

Your doctors’ names

Each plan has its own network, checked against its directory

Your prescription list

Name, dose and how often, so coverage can be checked plan by plan

Your current insurance

Questions about upcoming care

A planned surgery, a specialist you expect to see, anything you want a plan to handle

Whether a specific doctor, medication or pharmacy is covered is verified against the plan itself before you enroll, not assumed.

Timing

When you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan

You can join, switch or leave a Medicare Advantage plan only during set enrollment periods. Four apply to most people.

7 months around your Medicare start

Initial Enrollment Period

Starts three months before you get Part A and Part B, includes the month you get them, and ends three months after. Your first chance to join a Medicare Advantage plan. Applies to everyone new to Medicare, whether at 65 or through disability.

October 15 – December 7, every year

Annual Enrollment Period

Anyone with Medicare can join a Medicare Advantage plan, switch to a different one, or return to Original Medicare. Coverage begins January 1. This is when most people review their plan for the coming year.

January 1 – March 31, every year

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

Only for people already in a Medicare Advantage plan. One change is allowed: switch to another Medicare Advantage plan, or drop the plan and return to Original Medicare. Coverage starts the first of the month after the plan receives your request.

When something in your life changes

Special Enrollment Periods

Set windows opened by certain events: moving out of your plan’s service area, losing other coverage, qualifying for Medicaid, or qualifying for Extra Help with medication costs, among others. The window length depends on the event; a licensed agent can tell you whether one applies to you.

Enrollment period rules are set by Medicare and are published at Medicare.gov. Which periods apply to you depends on your circumstances.

Questions

Medicare Advantage questions, answered

What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage, also called Medicare Part C, is a way to receive your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage through a private insurance company approved by Medicare, instead of directly through Original Medicare. Plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers, and each plan sets its own costs, provider network and rules.

Can I keep my doctor?

Each plan has its own provider network, and networks can change from one plan year to the next. Bring your doctors’ names; the agent checks each plan’s directory before you enroll.

How do I know if I am eligible for Medicare Advantage?

You need Part A, Part B and an address in the plan’s service area. Your Part A and Part B start dates are printed on your red, white and blue Medicare card.

What happens if I want to switch plans later?

You can usually switch Medicare Advantage plans during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) or other special enrollment periods, depending on your circumstances.
