These figures are an estimate, not a quote and not an offer of insurance. They are based on market-average monthly premiums for simplified-issue final expense whole life coverage from MoneyGeek's 2026 rate analysis of final expense quotes across major carriers, updated August 12, 2026, using a baseline profile of a nonsmoker in average health. Your actual premium depends on your age, gender, tobacco use, health history, coverage amount, the carrier you select and your state of residence. Coverage availability and maximum face amounts vary by carrier and by age. Senior Solutions Insurance is a licensed insurance agency. Not all products are available in all states.
Final expense insurance can cost anywhere from roughly $30 to several hundred dollars a month
That is a range, not a quote. A healthy 50-year-old buying a smaller policy may pay considerably less than an 80-year-old buying the same amount of coverage. Men and women can also receive different rates, and tobacco use and health history can materially change the price.
The numbers below are market averages—not personalized quotes. Your actual premium comes from the carrier after your application and underwriting questions are considered.

Coverage caps tighten with age
Transamerica, one of our carriers, allows up to $50,000 through age 55, $40,000 through 65, $30,000 through 75 and $25,000 through 85. Ask what is available at your age before you apply.
What determines your final expense insurance rate?
Six things move the number. Your agent walks through each one before quoting a carrier.
Age
Age is one of the biggest factors. In general, buying earlier means a lower premium.
Coverage amount
A $20,000 policy costs more than a $10,000 policy, but the difference is not always exactly double.
Tobacco use
Tobacco use generally increases premiums.
Health
Different carriers evaluate health conditions differently. That is one reason comparing carriers matters.
Underwriting
Some policies ask health questions and others are designed for applicants who cannot qualify through traditional underwriting.
State and carrier
Available products, rates and eligibility vary by state and carrier.
Simplified issue vs. guaranteed issue: what’s the difference?
These are not two versions of the same policy. Simplified issue asks health questions and does not require a medical exam. Guaranteed issue does not ask health questions and does not require a medical exam either, but it costs more and a graded benefit may apply depending on the policy.
Simplified issue
You answer a short list of health questions. No medical exam. If you qualify, you often pay less than you would on a guaranteed-issue policy.
- Health questions
- Yes — a short list, yes/no
- Medical exam
- No
- Coverage
- $5,000 – $50,000, depending on the carrier
- Coverage starts
- Day one, full benefit
- Cost
- Often lower than guaranteed issue when you qualify — the rates shown above
Guaranteed issue
No health questions and no medical exam. Because the carrier accepts applicants regardless of health, premiums are higher and a graded death benefit may apply during the first years of coverage.
- Health questions
- None
- Medical exam
- No
- Coverage
- Policy-specific; graded benefits may apply
- Coverage starts
- Graded: full benefit typically after two years; before that most policies return the premiums paid (accidents excepted)
- Cost
- Typically higher than simplified issue
Many people who expect guaranteed issue turn out to qualify for simplified issue and the lower rate, so ask before assuming. See how specific health conditions affect approval.
How much final expense coverage do you need?
There is no single right amount.
Start with the expenses your family would actually have to pay: funeral or cremation costs, burial expenses, final medical bills, small debts and any other immediate obligations you want the policy to help cover. See what a funeral costs for a realistic starting point.
Some families choose $10,000 or $15,000. Others need $20,000 or more. The goal is not to buy the biggest policy available. It is to choose an amount that solves the problem without creating an unnecessary premium.

Why carrier comparison matters
The right carrier is not necessarily the one with the lowest published rate. Underwriting rules, issue ages, coverage limits and health questions differ from one company to another. Below: average monthly premium for a 50-year-old at $10,000 of coverage, where a public rate table exists.

Final expense insurance cost FAQs
How much does final expense insurance cost?
Using 2026 market averages for simplified-issue coverage, $10,000 of coverage costs about $30 a month for a 50-year-old woman and $38 for a man, rising to about $125 and $164 at age 80. Tobacco use typically adds 25–30%. These are averages, not quotes; your premium is set by the carrier after underwriting.
How much is a $10,000 final expense policy?
For a non-tobacco applicant, the 2026 market average runs from about $30 to $38 a month at age 50, $64 to $84 at 70, and $155 to $203 at 85, with women at the lower end of each range. A guaranteed-issue policy for the same amount typically costs more.
Does final expense insurance require a medical exam?
No. There is no exam, blood test or nurse visit on any final expense policy we sell. Simplified-issue policies ask a short list of yes-or-no health questions; guaranteed-issue policies ask none.
Can I get final expense insurance with diabetes?
Usually. Type 2 diabetes managed with pills is routinely approved at the standard rate. Insulin use is where carriers differ, and complications such as neuropathy or an amputation can move an applicant to a graded or guaranteed-issue policy. Because carriers draw those lines differently, comparing them matters. See how diabetes and other conditions are treated.
Can I get final expense insurance with high blood pressure?
High blood pressure controlled with medication is routinely accepted on simplified-issue policies. Uncontrolled blood pressure, or blood pressure combined with heart or kidney disease, can change the outcome at some carriers. A licensed agent can tell you which carriers accept your situation before you apply.
What is guaranteed issue life insurance?
A policy the carrier issues without health questions or medical underwriting, so approval does not depend on your health. Because the carrier accepts every eligible applicant, premiums are typically higher than simplified issue and the death benefit is usually graded for the first two years: if death occurs from natural causes in that period, most policies return the premiums paid rather than the full benefit.
What is simplified issue life insurance?
A policy issued after you answer a short list of health questions, with no medical exam. If you qualify, you receive the full death benefit from the day the policy is issued and often a lower premium than guaranteed issue. Coverage runs from $5,000 up to $50,000 depending on the carrier.
How much final expense coverage do I need?
Start with the cost of the funeral or cremation you would want, then add burial costs, final medical bills and any small debts. The NFDA median for a funeral with viewing and burial is about $8,300, and many families settle between $10,000 and $20,000. A licensed agent will work through the number with you.
Does final expense insurance have a cash value?
Final expense policies are usually whole life, and whole life policies generally build a modest cash value over time. It grows slowly and is not the reason to buy the policy; the death benefit is. Ask your agent how the specific policy you are considering handles cash value and loans.
How does the death benefit work?
When the insured dies, the carrier pays the face amount to the beneficiary named on the policy, generally as a lump sum, and the beneficiary decides how to use it. On simplified-issue policies the full benefit is in force from day one. On guaranteed-issue policies a graded benefit usually applies for the first two years.
