Overview

Medicare Advantage in Colorado

Colorado’s free, independent Medicare counseling comes from the State Health Insurance Assistance Program run by the Colorado Division of Insurance, the same office that licenses the agents who sell the plans.

A licensed agent in our Greenwood Village, Colorado office compares the Medicare Advantage plans filed for your Colorado county, explains the differences, and you decide. How Medicare Advantage works is the same in every state; what is available to you is not.

How plan availability works in Colorado

Medicare Advantage availability is set by county, not by state. The plans open to you are the ones filed for your county, and that list is what a licensed agent compares with you.

Plans are filed by county

Each plan files the counties it will serve, so two people in Colorado can have entirely different options depending on where they live.

A relative’s plan may not be yours

A plan a friend or relative has in another county may not be offered in yours. Only the list filed for your county counts.

Ask, with your ZIP code

Call 1-888-957-3337 (TTY 711), or use the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov with your ZIP code.

Free help and oversight

Free Medicare help in Colorado

Every state runs a State Health Insurance Assistance Program: federally funded, free, and staffed by trained counselors who do not sell insurance. It is a good place to get an independent second opinion on anything a licensed agent, including ours, tells you.

Free counseling

State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)

Colorado’s program is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), run by the Colorado Division of Insurance and reachable at 1-888-696-7213, with a statewide Spanish-language counseling line at 303-894-5953. Like every SHIP it is federally funded and free: trained counselors who do not sell insurance help you compare plans, understand Medicare notices, apply for Extra Help with drug costs and appeal a denial. Because it sits inside the Division of Insurance, it is also the shortest path to the state’s complaint process if a plan was sold to you badly. Program details as listed by shiphelp.org.

State regulator

Colorado Division of Insurance

Medicare Advantage plans are approved and overseen federally by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; the agents who sell them are licensed by the state.

The agents and agencies that sell Medicare Advantage in Colorado are licensed by the Colorado Division of Insurance, part of the Department of Regulatory Agencies. Its site lets you verify an agent’s license, file a complaint and check its status, and — unusually — run a “Find Lost Life Insurance” search for a deceased relative’s policy. Senior Solutions Insurance is licensed there; our agents work from Greenwood Village, and you can look us up.

Enrollment

When you can enroll in Colorado

You can join, switch or leave a Medicare Advantage plan only during set enrollment periods. Four apply to most people.

7 months around your 65th birthday

Initial Enrollment Period

The three months before the month you turn 65, that month, and the three months after. If you are already receiving Social Security, Part A and Part B enrollment is usually automatic; a Medicare Advantage plan is a separate choice.

October 15 – December 7, every year

Annual Enrollment Period

Each fall, anyone with Medicare can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage plan for coverage starting January 1.

January 1 – March 31, every year

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

People already in a Medicare Advantage plan can make one change: switch to another Medicare Advantage plan, or return to Original Medicare.

When something in your life changes

Special Enrollment Periods

Certain life events open a window outside those dates: moving to a new county, losing other coverage, or a change in eligibility for Medicaid or Extra Help, among others. Whether an event qualifies you is worth confirming rather than assuming; a licensed agent or State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) can tell you.

FAQ

Common questions in Colorado

Which Medicare Advantage plans are available in my part of Colorado?

It depends on your county. Colorado has 64, and each plan files the counties it serves, so Denver County’s list is not Larimer’s, El Paso’s or Mesa’s on the Western Slope. A licensed agent compares the plans filed for your county; the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov does the same by ZIP code.

Where can I get free, independent Medicare help in Colorado?

From Colorado’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), run by the Colorado Division of Insurance, at 1-888-696-7213, with Spanish-language counseling at 303-894-5953. It is federally funded, free, and staffed by counselors who do not sell insurance — a good second opinion on anything an agent tells you, including us.

Do I have to be in Colorado to work with Senior Solutions Insurance?

No, but Colorado is where we are: our office is at 5775 DTC Blvd in Greenwood Village and our agents are licensed by the Colorado Division of Insurance first. If you live in the state, the person who calls you back is local, and you can verify their license on the Division’s site.

How do I check that a Colorado Medicare agent is legitimate?

Use the Colorado Division of Insurance’s license verification, which is on its homepage, and ask for the agent’s license number before the call ends. If a plan was sold to you in a way that felt wrong, the same site takes the complaint, and Colorado’s SHIP at 1-888-696-7213 will tell you independently whether the plan fits.

Important information about the plans we offer

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to get information on all of your options.

Senior Solutions Insurance is not connected with or endorsed by the U.S. government or the federal Medicare program.

Deductibles, copays and coinsurance may apply. Limitations and exclusions may apply. You must continue to pay your Medicare Part B premium. Enrollment in a plan depends on the plan’s contract renewal with Medicare.
