Medicare Advantage in Georgia
Georgia’s free Medicare counseling is the Georgia State Health Insurance Assistance Program, run through the Division of Aging Services.

How plan availability works in Georgia
Medicare Advantage availability is set by county, not by state. The plans open to you are the ones filed for your county, and that list is what a licensed agent compares with you.
Plans are filed by county
Each plan files the counties it will serve, so two people in Georgia can have entirely different options depending on where they live.
A relative’s plan may not be yours
A plan a friend or relative has in another county may not be offered in yours. Only the list filed for your county counts.
Ask, with your ZIP code

Free Medicare help in Georgia
Every state runs a State Health Insurance Assistance Program: federally funded, free, and staffed by trained counselors who do not sell insurance. It is a good place to get an independent second opinion on anything a licensed agent, including ours, tells you.
Georgia State Health Insurance Assistance Program
Georgia’s program is the Georgia State Health Insurance Assistance Program, run through the Georgia Division of Aging Services, at 1-866-552-4464. It is federally funded and free, and its counselors do not sell insurance; they help Georgians compare plans, understand Medicare notices and apply for Extra Help. shiphelp.org lists the program under its full name rather than an acronym, so if you see it referred to by another name, confirm it is the Division of Aging Services program before you rely on it. Program details as listed by shiphelp.org.
Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner
Medicare Advantage plans are approved and overseen federally by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; the agents who sell them are licensed by the state.
The agents and agencies that sell Medicare Advantage in Georgia are licensed by the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, whose Consumer Services Division is, in its own words, the investigative arm of the office and takes complaints about insurance providers and agents through its website. Ask any agent for their Georgia license number.
When you can enroll in Georgia
You can join, switch or leave a Medicare Advantage plan only during set enrollment periods. Four apply to most people.
Initial Enrollment Period
The three months before the month you turn 65, that month, and the three months after. If you are already receiving Social Security, Part A and Part B enrollment is usually automatic; a Medicare Advantage plan is a separate choice.
Annual Enrollment Period
Each fall, anyone with Medicare can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage plan for coverage starting January 1.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
People already in a Medicare Advantage plan can make one change: switch to another Medicare Advantage plan, or return to Original Medicare.
Special Enrollment Periods
Certain life events open a window outside those dates: moving to a new county, losing other coverage, or a change in eligibility for Medicaid or Extra Help, among others. Whether an event qualifies you is worth confirming rather than assuming; a licensed agent or Georgia State Health Insurance Assistance Program can tell you.
Common questions in Georgia
Why does Georgia’s county count matter for Medicare Advantage?
Because plans file by county and Georgia has 159 of them, more than any state except Texas. Fulton, DeKalb and the other metro Atlanta counties can each have a different list, and rural south Georgia counties often have much shorter ones. A licensed agent compares only the plans filed for your county.
Where can Georgians get free Medicare counseling?
From the Georgia State Health Insurance Assistance Program, run through the Georgia Division of Aging Services, at 1-866-552-4464. It is federally funded and free, and its counselors do not sell insurance.
I live in a rural Georgia county. Will I have options?
Possibly fewer than metro Atlanta, and in some of Georgia’s 159 counties very few. That is exactly why the county check comes first: if the list is short, a licensed agent can tell you what alternatives exist, and the Georgia SHIP counselors will confirm it independently.
Who investigates a complaint about a Medicare agent in Georgia?
The Consumer Services Division of the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, which describes itself as the office’s investigative arm and takes complaints about agents and insurers through its website. Medicare oversees the plans themselves; Georgia’s SHIP at 1-866-552-4464 can tell you which route fits.
